'We aren't getting carried away' - Gregg

INSTITUTE manager John Gregg was delighted with his side's comfortable 5-0 win at Dundela, on Saturday.

However he wants his young side to keep their feet firmly on the ground and not read too much into their Co-operative Insurance Cup success at the weekend.

“We played well and I was obviously happy with the result, but we aren’t getting carried away with one win,” he admitted.

“I thought both Thomas Wray alongside David Ogilby were super, while the two young full-backs Graham Crown and Graham Taylor also did well and we looked solid at the back.

“I have always said I believe in the young players and Saturday’s result can only help their confidence, at the end of the day we still have the likes of Vinny Sweeney and Ruairi McClean to come into the side.

“We scored five terrific goals, but Conor McShane’s and Matty Smyth’s goals were super.

“Conor’s was an excellent strike, while Matty beat three or four players before lobbing the keeper from around 30 yards.”

Gregg was also full of praise for debutant Eddie McIntyre, who helped himself to a goal, at the weekend and he also signalled out Declan Divin for praise.

“I think Eddie can be a real gem for us this season,” he said.

“He scored a good and looked dangerous all day, hopefully the more games he gets the better he will become.

“Decky has his doubters, but I’m not worried about that, all I want him to do is keep working hard and if he performs the way he did on Saturday, then I’m convinced those doubters, if they are honest enough, will change their opinion.

“He worked really hard on Saturday and with a bit more luck could have scored a few more goals.

“People should know that Decky like everyone else from last year’s squad, who have decided to stay with us, has taken a dip in wages and isn’t earning big money, so that proves enough to me that he cares about the club.

“However having said all that Decky like everyone else from Saturday’s match knows that one good performance doesn’t mean anything. What he and the rest of the squad need to do now, is try and get a bit of momentum and secure some more positive results.”
