WE MUST TAKE POINTS - QUINN

GLENAVON boss Marty Quinn says his side simply must pick up points when they travel to the Newry Showgrounds on Friday evening (kick-off 7.45pm).

The Blues romped to a 3-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last season and a repeat scoreline would be just what the doctor order for Quinn’s wounded side after their defeat to Linfield on Tuesday evening.

The Blues have now dropped to sixth place in the Carling Premiership table and desperately need to pick up points if they are to hold on to that sought-after top six spot.

“We’ve got to take the points from the teams who are going to be in and around us and I think Newry are going to be one of those teams. We’ve got to take something out of it,” he told the ‘MAIL.’

“I know Gerry (Flynn) is a bit frustrated with his lads at the minute but on paper they’ve a good side and it won’t be easy to get anything down there.

“It really depends on the result against Linfield as to what we’d be content with from this game,” he said before Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat.

“What way they react to Gerry’s frustrations remains to be seen. Hopefully they have a similar performance as they did in this fixture last year when we came away with a 3-0 victory.”

Glenavon will be without the suspended Trevor Molloy as well as star striker Gary Hamilton who is nearing fitness after an injury that has kept him out since his move to Mourneview Park last month.

“Gary’s getting daily treatment and he’s starting to do a bit of light jogging so everything’s going to plan,” said Quinn.

“We’re looking at maybe another four to five weeks. He’s chomping at the bit but he’s being careful as well and he’s doing exactly what the physio tells him. He’s making good progress.”
