We showed we can play good football

Manager's View

I THOUGHT we thoroughly deserved the win.

I was very pleased and it was probably one of the best displays in the year that I’ve been at Glenavon.

The last two games have been absolutely outstanding when we’ve tried to pass the ball about, play good football and keep it on the deck and we’ve got our just rewards for it with the six points. It’s a big six points I may add as it puts us back in contention for the top six.

I definitely want to get my team playing that sort of football from now on. We’ve proved that we can play better football when we get it down and pass it and players that have been instrumental in that are Barry Johnston and Ryan Harpur in the middle of the park. They’ve been absolutely outstanding, particularly young Ryan who has been dominating the last two games and when he gets it he wants to pass it.

Hugh Davey has added a lot to the team as well. When he gets the ball you can see that his first thought is ‘who can I pass this to?’ rather than just humping it up the pitch.

I thought generally our back four were excellent defensively and also when we were going forward they were bringing the ball from the back and trying to pick out a pass.

I thought Jay Magee kept Rory Patterson very quiet. He was keen to take on the job and he certainly came out the winner.

I thought the penalty decision was very harsh and I didn’t think it warranted a penalty kick to be honest. I thought justice was done whenever Andrew Plummer saved it. It was harsh but it was saved and well done to Andrew.

At the other end, James Costello had three or four chances, one of which he took. I’m not pointing the finger at James because he’s still learning the game. I had a word with him and told him that when he gets into those positions he has to keep it down and he didn’t do that unfortunately. I wouldn’t fault him though because his work-rate and performance was outstanding.

It was good to see the supporters on their feet, applauding the lads off last Saturday. We had a fantastic backing throughout the game and we really enjoyed it. I think we were all gutted when they equalised but we showed good character in bouncing back again with a nice winning goal.
