Weather disrupts Portstewart Ladies schedule

JANUARY proved to be a difficult month for Portstewart Golf Club Ladies Branch due to the severe weather conditions with some competitions being cancelled, or in the case of the Winter League being postponed until January 17.

The Voucher Competition took place on 6 January on what was a very frosty morning. Twelve intrepid ladies played on temporary greens on the Riverside Course, the winner was Gillian Lemon (35) with 37 points and the runner up Evelyn O’Neill (27) with 36 points. The Ladies Alliance match due to be played on the Strand Course was cancelled.

January’s Monthly Medal was played on 13 January. Only two ladies braved the elements on the Strand Course with Maggie Penny (16) winning with a score of 78 (nett) and Grace McDowell (18) runner up with 79 (nett).

The Monday Ball and Lunch was played on 18 January over nine holes on the Riverside with the weather being pleasant leading to a good turnout of 26 players. Winner was Margaret Haire (24) with 28 (nett) over Heather Moore (36) with 28 (nett). Lunch afterwards in The Cromore Halt Restaurant was well supported and thanks must go to Marti Coid for a very enjoyable day.

The Team Scramble was held on 20 January in fairly unfavourable conditions six teams took part in a Team Scramble competition on the Strand Course. Winners were Anne Agnew (11) Shelia Aicken (20) and Christine Hutchinson (21) with a score of 58.8 (nett) and runners-up Mary Glover (9) Grace McDowell (18) and Elaine Cameron (27) with 61.6 (nett).

On 27 January the postponed December Monthly Medal took place with Anne Agnew (11) winning with a score of 70 (nett) and Jean Robinson (26) runner up with 71 (nett).

Hopefully adverse weather will not impact too much on February’s competitions and the ladies will be able to play and enjoy their golf throughout the month without too much interruption.
