Weather plays its part

Twelve boats started the race and as the start gun went Bruce McFarlane and brother David were first to cross the line followed by James Campbell in a Laser. The Feva of Georgia Grossey and Alex Magee were over the line and were recalled. Campbell thought it was him and wrongly returned losing his second place start.

As the boats settled down on the windward leg McFarlane’s RS Vision was in front followed by the Lasers of Mervyn Montgomery and Alistair Simpson. Next boat was the junior Feva helmed by Jonty Callaghan with T C Baxter and Charles Jack.

The Feva of Oonagh Jordan and Josh Weisman were working their way through the fleet, as was James Campbell in the Laser.

As the fleet rounded the windward mark The RS Vision was well in the lead followed by Mervyn Mongomery and Alistair Simpson. James Campbell was now a close fourth.

The gusty conditions took their toll with several capsizes from Alistair Simpson. He was not the only one to suffer at the hands of the fickle wind and even the Vision of the experienced McFarlane Brothers almost went over.

Oonagh Jordan and Josh Weisman had to retire when Josh struck his head violenty on the mast. This let Kurtis into second.

After nearly one hour in the lively conditions the finish line gun sounded as the McFarlanes crossed the line first, followed by Mervyn Mongomery and James Campell . On handicap adjustment Campbell was second and Montgomery third.

The leading junior boat on handicap was Jonty Callaghan and crew T C Baxter and Charles Jack.
