A goal from Portstewart’s Lee Forgrave thwarted Ballymoney’s hopes of getting something out of the game.

“I thought we played much better and deserved to get something out of the game,” commented Peter. “We were wastefull in front of goals and didn’t take our chances when they came our way.

“The goal we conceded was really poor from our point of view and Ihave always told the lads that if you are going to let a team score that you really need them to work hard for it. It was extremely frustrating to have given away a goal like that.

“To be honest I didn’t think either side did enough to win and a draw would have been a fair result.

“We managed to get ourselves into good positions but we just don’t seem to have the confidence when we get into those situations.

“They seem to panic when they get a chance and it shows every week. It’s something that has been an issue since I took over at Christmas and I have been working hard to try and instill confidence in the players and trying to instill self belief in the squad has been without doubt the biggest job of all.

“I really believe that we are better than our league position and we just haven’t had the rub of the green.”

This Saturday Ballymoney United are at home to Banbridge at the Riada Stadium and with time running out on the men from the Toon, Manager Cairns will be desperate to see his side put points on the board.

“Banbridge took a bad thumping on Saturday and things could go either way when they play us. They will either come down to Ballymoney lacking in confidence or they will be looking to fight back.

“This was a game I really fancied our chances to get something out of, however, it looks like I am going to going into the game with a depleted squad.

“We are being hit hard with suspensions and we also picked up a number of injuries as well.”

Ballymoney United have five games remaining after Saturday to try and save their season, and despite being continually optimistic about the Club’s chances of remaining in Championship Two, Cairns is having to admit that their days could be numbered.

“It’s not really looking good at the moment. I am an optimist but with every game that passes our chances are rapidly dwindling. No matter what happens and if we stay up or go down we will look forward to pre-season where we can start with a fresh sheet and work and building the confidence in this squad.

“That doesn’t mean that I have given up hope of staying up, we will keep fighting to the end.”
