Wheelers riders finish well in a good weekend

It was another very successful weekend's racing for the riders of West Down Wheelers.

Five riders were representing the club on Sunday as Paul Wilkinson and Ian Weir headed down south to Drogheda to compete in the Boyne GP.

Meanwhile, Matt Andy and Brandon headed to Londonderry to compete in the Dany Boy Races. And what a day’s racing it was all round.

First off in Drogheda was Ian in the A4 Race. Never afraid of having a go, he tried a few times to get away but had to be content to finish strongly in the bunch.

In the A1 Race, Paul found himself in a group of 13 riders roughly 18 to 20 seconds ahead of the big bunch and they held out to the finish where Paul crossed the line just outside the top ten with a fantastic effort as he begins his first year riding in the A1 category.

Andy was the Wheelers’ only rider in the A4s at the Dany Boy Races. He has been very consistent in the A4s but the last few points he needs to move up are proving elusive.

Matt and Brandon, riding in the A3s, had mixed results. Matt said he didn’t have the legs and pulled in after a couple of laps but it was a completely different scenerio for Brandon. He finished well in the bunch - not bad for a rider who only took up cycling last year.

Last Tuesday night, the Wheelers held a meeting in the Albert to release the 2016 Club Race Programme and to sign up new members for 2016. Sammy Watts and Scott Stevenson both joined and the club are hopeful of more newcomers soon.

The latest Batch of Club Clothing should be ready for pick up this week. Keep an eye on the club’s Facebook for that and for info on the club runs, which will continue when there is no racing. There will also be some good runs hosted by the club over the Easter Holidays with people enjoying a hard-earned break from work.
