Wheelers’ tandem group up and cycling!

After well over a year in planning, and with the guidance and help from Jackie from the RNIB and club members Ronan, Gerry, Pat and Jim, we have established our Tandem cycling group which meets most Monday evenings in Cookstown to help the blind and partially sighted people enjoy the sport and hobby of cycling.

The help from these tandem pilots facilitates the participation of local people who would never get a chance to cycle a bike on public roads.

Although it has been a lengthy process to get up and running it has been a great pleasure to see the enjoyment that not only the participants have but also the Carn Wheelers volunteers who have been piloting the tandems around the roads near Cookstown.

After taster sessions in the Mid Ulster Sports Arena and Loughry College, the cyclists have gradually been building up their miles week by week and have now firmly been caught by the cycling bug!

Congratulations to Mary Angela Taylor on winning the womens inter club league, also to Mairead McGurk who came third. Along with Samantha Convery the girls also clinched the womens team title for the club, all in all a very successful Interclub for the Carn ladies.

Eunan McAleese and Nicky Gormly took the green and black to the Stafford Wholesale 2 day race in Wexford at the weekend. In this very tough race both men did the club proud with Eunan taking a hard fought 8th place in the general classification, Nicky was racing well only 59seconds down on the leader when a back injury forced him to retire from the race after 30km.

This weekend saw the Carn Wheelers travel to two events, on Saturday the mtb crew headed for the Cooley Mountains in Co Louth for the annual 52Km Cooley Thriller while Sunday brought the fearsome Inishowen 100. The club was well attended at both of these exhausting cycles. Yes folks, the waiting is over! This years Tour Te Donegal is now officially all go go go.

Cost for dinner, bed and breakfast will be 65 euro per head. Please contact Darren by email at [email protected] to provisionally book your place so I have a rough idea of numbers
