Wilkinson is quickest on Rathfriland Road

ON a warm dry sunny night 21 riders competed in a 10 mile TT, held on the tough Rathfriland Road course due to roadworks on the Castlewellan road.

The fastest man yet again was Paul Wilkinson with an excellent time of 22.45. It looks like he is going to be unbeatable in the club TT this year.

Second man on the night was Paul McManus with another superb time of 23.14. Paul is a triathalon man like Pete Savage and if he just trained for cycling goodness knows what he could do.

Third on the night and having his best year yet was Mark Alexander with a very good 24.22, just beating his old mate Clive Adamson by eight seconds. His time of 24.30 was a fine effort.

Davy Cartmill was next with a 24.51. He’s not giving up yet as there is some battle going on for the places between second and fifth place and it looks like everyone will have to get faster in the coming races to get up there.

Race secretary Clive says he’s delighted with the way the guys are going. Not only is it good for them but the club as well.

Last Thursday night West Down Wheelers held a 10 mile TT on the Warrenpoint-Newry circuit for the Eric Maxwell Memorial with the winner of the past two years sadly no longer with us, Paul Healion.

A new name would go on the cup and he was a fellow Dubliner Con Collis with an excellent time of 20.23 with local man A Baines second with 21.13 and L Robinson (Ards CC) third with 21.14.

Some members put up a very good performance on the night. Paul Wilkinson just missed out on 21 minute ride with a 22.01, Mark Alexander rode the race of his life to record a superb 22.54, Clive Adamson had his fastest time for a while when he recorded a 23.16.

The next Wheeler was junior Noel Doyle with a 24 07, his time was good enough to get him first junior.

And what about Allister Walker, his time of 24.11 has shot him up the leader board. He looks to be on for a 23 min ride this year.

There are another three races on this course this year so those riders who missed out have a chance to get a PB.

Next week’s race is a circuit TT starting on the Rathfriland Road, via the Co-op, Moneyslane, Ballydown to the finish. It’s a very tough one so let’s see how many people turn up for that.
