William’s the main man on his Captain’s Day

THE Club Captain for 2012 is Dr William McCandless, a dedicated golfing enthusiast and a wonderful example to everyone playing golf at Banbridge Golf Club.

Last Saturday was William’s Captains Day and preparations were in place but the weather forecast was not looking promising.

Despite challenging conditions in the days leading up to Saturday the greens staff had the course looking at it’s best this year, with the fairway and greens looking particularly impressive.

The weather on Saturday was better than forecast and a fantastic days golf and craic was had by all.

In all 14 players bettered 40 points with Gareth MacGregor (42) winning the low section, Dane Ward (44) the middle section and Norman Doak (41) the high section.

Trevor Woods played great again and won the council prize with 41 points and Rory Madeley won the prize for team captains with 39 points.

With all the power hitters on display Rawdon Crozier won the longest drive on his way to 38 points and the Past Captains prize, well done. Beefer Mulholland was closest the pin at the 12th 37cm, a great shot – I hope he holed the putt!

Colin Wilton has had a few problems with his feet in recent weeks and hasn’t played as much as he would have liked leading up to the big day. He played steady for the first 11 holes then five birdies in the last seven holes added up to a 67 and the best gross prize.

At the business end of the day John McCormack continued his recent good form with a stunning score of 45 points good enough to win on many as Captains Day.

At the beginning of his round John Convery didn’t make a great start, with a bogey and two doubles in his first four holes. However, John played great golf for the remaining 14 holes and it all added up to a massive 46 points and John Convery join an illustrious list of the winners of the Captain’s Prize at Banbridge Golf Club.

A big thank you to Dr Willian McCandless for the beautiful prizes, the greens, catering and bar staff and all the volunteers who made the day such a success.
