Willis' All-Ireland silver success

The Clounagh Junior High School student posted a personal best of 2.09.94 - two-hundredths of a second off gold - in the photo finish.

His progress at the GloHealth-backed Athlone meeting has left Willis ranked number one in Northern Ireland and second across Ireland.

Willis also enjoyed an appearance at the Scottish Athletic Championships as he recorded fourth in the final of the under 15s’ 800 metres in Glasgow.

Other athletes from the area on show in Athlone were Ethan Williamson, Kyle Magwood and Hanna Vogan.

VOLLEYBALL

Craigavon Senior High School under 16s made a mark on the national volleyball programme recently with runners-up spot across the boys’ Northern Ireland League.

Progress from the group stages left Craigavon with a play-off spot at the Jordanstown-based tournament.

A 2-0 defeat of Campbell College Belfast across the semi-final set up a derby date with Portadown College.

The national final showdown between the two Portadown schools proved thrilling for the spectators.

A 25-22 success put Portadown College in control before Craigavon hit back on 25-23.

The decisive third set was won by Portadown College with a tally of 18-16.

RUGBY

Portadown players across the mini-rugby section took part in fixtures home and away.

A P7 touring party set off for Scotland and enjoyed a visit to Ayr.

On home soil, mini-rugby players lined out last weekend against Lisburn.

FOOTBALL

Teams from the Portadown area will enjoy a clean sweep across the NA Sport/LBBOB-backed Boys’ Brigade Soccer Sevens finals.

Knocknamuckley and 7th Portadown will meet in the under 14s’ showdown, with the under 18s’ final between Ahorey and Knocknamuckley.

Ahorey marched into the under 18s’ main event by beating Maralin on a 4-0 tally.

Elliott McKew and Robert Hamilton were on the scoresheet as part of the winning Ahorey performance.

Knocknamuckley under 14s kept alive hopes of a double for the Boys’ Brigade thanks to a 5-3 defeat of Ahorey.
