Wilmont needs players to ‘see the game out’

The Ballymoney men were leading 1-0 thanks to an Alan Sheppard goal and as the game went into the final stages, their chances of making it to the fifth round were thwarted by an own goal, the second in as many weeks.

With the fixture tied 1-1 at the end of extra time, it came down to the dreaded penalty shootout with Wakehurst progressing 1-1 (3-2 penalties).

“We were the better team in the first half by a mile. They were poor but they ground out a draw thanks to an own goal. We had six chances to clear the ball and we couldn’t manage to do that and scored an own goal from their corner.

“I travelled with no goalkeeper and had to use David Reid, however, he didn’t have a save to make. We didn’t create very much either but we had all the ball and never looked in danger. We were the better team in extra time and had a couple of chances but couldn’t score and then it went to penalties and it’s a lottery when that happens.

“The best of it was David saved their first penalty and we scored our first and after that it went to pot.

“There are some players who need to step up, we can’t seem to see a game out and until they learn to do that they won’t win matches.

“What they were doing isn’t even something you can work on in training. if you can’t clear a ball when you’re under pressure maybe you shouldn’t be playing football.

“It’s so disappointing because we could have ended up with a big team in the next round. The players I have are good enough and they have proved it before but after Saturday I might have to think seriously about changing things up.”

This week, Glebe are back in cup action when they entertain Limavady United at the Riada Stadium. “I could bring in a few players for Friday night who haven’t got a game for a few weeks,” said Jason. “I think there are a few boys who need a shake up and it will give others the chance to step up and show what they are made of. When you are playing against a good team like Limavady they will punish you if you make mistakes so I need to seriously look at the squad I select.”

Glebe Rangers play Limavady United in the Intermediate Cup at the Riada Stadium with a 7.45pm kick-off.
