The 16-year-old completed his final two races of the season on Saturday September 20.

As it stands Wilson has finished the Ginetta Junior Ireland championship in second place, only six points behind first place, however, this gap is likely to be less when the results are finalised, due to a dispute being lodged against another competitors cars by another team, which could have an effect on the end result of the championship.

This was an incredible achievement for Wilson in his first year ever in car racing, a feat never achieved in the past.

In fact the local teenager would have won the series outright had he not been shunted off by another competitor at Kirkistown during rounds 7 and 8.

It was an extremely close championship, with Wilson finishing every race that was counted towards the championship on the podium in either first, second or third place, again something that has never been achieved here before.

The team were very impressed with his attitude from the very start of the season and he displayed a strength of character normally associated with someone much older that just 16 years of age.

His proud father Robert said: “I know that I as his father am immensely proud of how he handled himself with dignity and humility throughout the entire season, even when things did not seem to be going his way and the fact that he was the first person over to warmly congratulate the new champion as soon as the race was over was testament to his character.

“Wilson for 2015 would like to get over to race in the UK to learn the circuits and there are some excellent options for us over there. There is the Renault Clio Cup which supports the British Touring Car series and there is a fantastic Mini challenge but the rest of 2014 and 2015 are very important years for school work with GCSE etc, so we might have to just pick and choose some individual races that suit time wise and test whenever possible. Whatever he ends up doing I am sure he will do it to the very best of his ability and we trust God will keep him safe while he is doing it.”
