Wily Tweed edges out young hotshot Sweeney in excellent Steven Doey Memorial final

DIXIE Tweed made his experience pay as he defeated talented teenager Corey Sweeney to win the inaugural Steven Doey Memorial Competition at the Triangle Snooker Club on Friday evening.

The handicap system saw Dixie give Corey a 25 point handicap each frame.

And it was the 17-year-old who made a great start, compiling a 22 break to win the opening frame 77-39.

But Dixie levelled in a tight second frame which went down to the colours which Dixie took with a good clearance to win 79-59.

The veteran made it 2-1 with breaks of 21 and 27 to win the third frame 77-43.

Dixie also started the fourth frame well with a 21 break but Corey kept his cool to clear the colours to square the match.

Poor safety by Corey saw Dixie go back into the lead at 3-2 but Corey levelled again by taking the sixth frame in emphatic fashion, 75-24 to force a deciding frame.

This proved to be a nip and tuck affair until a slack safety shot allowed Dixie in to compile a vital 24 break to clinch the title.

Afterwards Lorraine Hutchinson, partner of Steven Doey, presented the prizes.

A special thanks to Sammy Walker for refereeing an excellent final, Sean Moffatt for sponsoring the trophies and everyone who played in the competition.
