Win for Rathcoole not enough to secure title

Rathcoole FC Reserves took on Mountainview in the Ballymena and Provincial League (Junior Division 3), with both teams looking for a win.

Victory for Mountainview would see them take the title while a win for Rathcoole would see them overtake Mountainview, and hope Ballysillan would slip up at Carnlough to allow them to take the title.

Rathcoole went in front after Adam Richmond scored on the 8th minute then doubling their advantage through Glenn Hosie to lead 2-0 at half-time.

Mountainview got back into the game with a goal early in the second half, but an own goal soon put Rathcoole two goals clear again.

Matt Doyle scored a fourth goal for Rathcoole on the 60th minute but Mountainview hit back with Billy Brown scoring his second.

It was Rathcoole’s turn to concede an own goal late in the match, but the game finished 4-3 in Rathcoole’s favour, leaving them an anxious wait for the Ballysillan result.

Ballysillan went into their game against Carnlough Swifts knowing a win would see them lift the title.

The visitors seized their opportunity, hammering Swifts 5-0 to secure the top spot in style.

Elsewhere, 3rd Ballyclare OB took on Castle Star Reserves in an East Antrim derby.

Marc Campbell converted a penalty on the 10th minute putting Ballyclare in front then two more goals by Matthew McClurg and Steve Howe osaw the lead extended to three by half-time. McClurg scored his second goal on the 54th minute followed, by March Campbell with his second ten minutes later to make it 5-0.

Castle never gave up and got a consolation goal eight minutes from time.
