Winning start for new U8 side

THE newly formed Rathfriland U8 team started the season in fine form against Windmill.

Rathfriland took the lead with the persistence Ethan Niblock showed paying off as Scott Chambers slotted home after a goalmouth scramble.

They came under pressure from Windmill in the second half but hung on thanks to some solid tackling from Alan McKnight at right back and brave goal keeping from Thomas Ingram.

Encouraged by their first win Rathfriland started strongly against Ashgrove and after some good work in midfield by Paul Travers and Ben Johnston they took the lead with a good finish from Scott Chambers.

In the second half some strong defending from Mark Bronte and Paul Travers allowed Rathfriland to push forward and scored again with a second goal from Scott Chambers.

A fine midfield burst from Rhys McKee ended with him being upended just outside the box and from the free kick Scott Chambers was denied the hat trick by the crossbar.

This was an excellent start to the campaign from the Rathfriland squad and bodes well for the future.
