Winning team light up a dark course in the Neil Thompson Trophy

Members played for the Neil Thompson Memorial Trophy, which began at a rather late tee-off time of 8pm, the nine hole competition played in the dark.

Similar to Down Royal’s recent night golf experiment, the course was marked out with LED sticks while the flags and golf balls were also illuminated.

The heavy rain which had fallen all day cleared and the competitors enjoyed the challenge of playing in the dark. Torches became very useful as darkness increased and some very good scores were recorded in the scramble.

Handicaps were calculated as one tenth of the total for the four members of a team. Trevor Hall, Richard Allen, Stevie Spence and Davis Heaney won with just 22.3 strokes. Michael McNeice, Billy Dougherty, Mark Coburn and Stevie Shields were second on 22.7.

After an excellent supper, the prizes were presented to the winners. Over £3,000 was raised for the Friends of the Cancer Centre in memory of Neil Thompson who passed away earlier this year. A raffle helped to contribute to this excellent total.

McKinstry Memorial Cup

Over seventy pairs competed in this very popular fourball better ball competition last Saturday.

The winners were never likely to be caught after the stunning total they returned. They were Mark Jamieson (19) and Chris Collins (17), who topped the field with a storming 49 points.

They set themselves up for a combined well to score an amazing 27 points on the front nine. This included three four pointers.
