Winter League enters the final furlong

Ballycastle Golf Club Winter League Report

THE 2010 Winter League at Ballycastle Golf Club has now entered its final furlong and barring a Devon Loch-style collapse, team H will be crowned this year’s champions.

Consisting of team captain Michael Colohan, Paul Scott, George McVeigh, Jonathan McBride, Eamon McIlroy, Denis Devine, Michael Close and Vincent Gallagher, team H have now amassed a total of seventy points, eight clear of team K with team E three points further back in third.

In the bottom section of the Winter League, team F have opened up a nine point lead over team I after they top scored this week with a five card total of 179 points, but alas, it is curtains for team B at the foot of the table as they are now mathematically certain of collecting the wooden spoons, regardless of next week’s results.

In the overall individual competition, David Getty holds the lead on 212 points after improving his total by seven shots thanks to a score of 36 points on Saturday.

Sean Brogan is second overall with a six card total of 209 points and Gerard Dowds is in third on 207 points.

In Saturday’s stableford competition, Paul Scott, playing off ten, completed his round in level par for a superb winning total of 41 points over sixteen holes. Seamus McMullan, playing off eight, also went round in level par to take second spot with 39 points and Billy Rooney jnr finished third with 38 points.

In the section two competition, Victor Young top scored with a fabulous return of 40 points, Leonard McCormick took second for the second week in a row with 39 points and Joe Gillan was third, also with a score of 39 points.

Sunday’s section one stableford competition went to Austin Mullan with a score of 36 points and Brian Cunning took second place with 35 points, ahead of Patrick Dallat jnr on the back nine.

In section two, Liam Laverty recorded 38 points to win with Shaun McCook in second place with a score of 37 points.

On Wednesday 17 March, to mark St.Patrick’s Day, Ballycastle Golf Club is running an Open stableford competition for ladies and gents.

One of our esteemed members, Louis Sweeney, has kindly donated a trophy to the club and the ‘Sweeney Cup’ will be awarded annually to the member with the best score on St.Patrick’s Day.
