Scotland has not always been a happy hunting ground for the 23 year-old as one of his old adversaries, Andrew Martin enjoys the accolade of being one of the few players to have recorded a victory over McVeigh. However, the local player showed all his graft and fighting spirit to claim another gold.

Krysten Coombs is another player to have taken McVeigh to the wire, the latest in Dortmund when McVeigh lifted the World title and the two met in the semi-final with Martin awaiting the winner to contest the final.

The Irish player unusually found himself one set down after Coombs took the opening set 21-13 and McVeigh had to call on all his confidence in his own ability to rally and take the second 22-20.

Niall was pushed all the way but came through to book his place in the final winning the nail-biting decider 24-22.

Against Martin, Niall was taken all the way 21-18 23-21 but this will have given coaches Andy Stewart and Leslie Dewart some areas to work on in the coming months.
