World in his hands

EUROPEAN light-welterweight champion Paul McCloskey is already in talks to fight for a world title, the Sentinel can reveal.

The Dungiven southpaw this week spoke with a promoter outside of Europe about taking a world title shot with a mystery contender. Speaking ahead of the champion's defence title match this Friday night, McCloskey's trainer John Breen confirmed talks had already taken place between himself, Paul and the boxing promoter.

"I can't really say too much but we have been in talks with people about a world title fight," revealed Breen.

"I spoke to the promoter this week and Paul has as well. He's basically said, 'let's see how Friday goes and we will take it from there," he added.

The world class trainer, a former champion himself, also revealed the promoter was based "at the other side of the world" spiralling McCloskey's list of possible contenders to a global proportion.

Breen has been pulling out all

the stops in the run up to the

headliner, drafting over former competitor and IBO World, British and European champion Colin Lynes

to train with McCloskey.

He said: "Paul reached his weight yesterday and is in the best shape he's ever been. All the hard work has already been done so this week are just ticking over - skipping and just keeping him at his weight."

The Breen's Gym owner has even admitted to sparring with his own nerves this week.

"I'm used to this build up and preparing these boys for the big matches, but I haven't been sleeping this week at all. I'm more nervous now than what I was myself when I was boxing."

The trainer added: "In the EU, Lauri is number one. Out of the top 15 in Europe he is at the top. Paul will put him out in the middle to late rounds. Paul is high up there, he's ready for a world title. Lets just get past Friday."

The sponsored Yanjing Beer Fight Night will take place this Friday, June 11 and will also feature a second title fight on the card when Lurgan's Stephen Haughian takes on former British Champ Kevin McIntyre for the Celtic Welterweight title.
