Wray's bright display on his way to Captain's Day delight at the 'Blacker

Stevie Wray secured Stanley Jelly's Captain's Day prize on Saturday with 41 points off his 11 handicap.

He posted nine pars and a single birdie across the front nine before 21 points towards the back leg.

Vincent O’Brien, off his 18 handicap, was overall runner-up.

The Juvenile’s Prize went to Joseph Stevenson with 36, with John Guy posting the longest drive and John Cassidy nearest to the pin.

Gerald Greene’s tally of 36 points secured the Veterans’ Prize before Stevie Grant wrapped up the team captain’s honour.

The winning team featured William Hewitt, Victor Kelly, Ivor Mackey and Tommy Kerr on 92 points.

In the Past Captains’ Cup, Tony Benson finished on 31 points and Moira Irwin proved the pick of the ladies’ section - with Karen Shaw and David Jelly the top guests on, respectively, 22 and 42.

Benson’s run across the 14-hole stableford led to 31 points as the 1992 captain collected the cup.

The Captain’s Prize went to Stevie Wray on 41 points.

Other prizes went to Edgar McReynolds (sixth nett, 38), Keith Walker (second gross, 73), Tim Sandford (fifth nett, 39), Mark Currie (fourth nett, 39), David Ross (gross, 73), David Blakely (third nett, 39) and Vincent O’Brien (second nett, 40).

In the Thursday Open Stableford, Edward Rowe off his five handicap finished on 41 points for a single-shot success over Patrick Farrell.

Joseph Stevenson was third on 39 points and Joel McCrory collected the gross honour.

The Shelbourne Motors-sponsored Wednesday Sweep left Jim Wright first on 34 points, with the section winners as follows: (0-10) - Derek McCoy 31 points; (11-14) - Ken McKeen 32 points; (15-18) - Paul Coulter 32 points; (19-plus) - Edgar McReynolds 31 points.

The Monday Seniors finished with Billy Patterson on 34 points, with David Gordon and Liam Murray the respective winners of the low and high sections.

Robin Arbuthnot won the Veterans’ Prize on 31 points.

Portadown’s Sam Rutherford team proved too strong for Clones in the second round of the Cowdy.

Stevie Fox, the team captain, helped steer the town side to two 8 up wins and five on 5 up.

In the Junior Cowdy, Portadown lost out to Clones.

Tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) fixture list includes the Open Stableford - with the Family Fun Day on Friday, July 8.

The Family Fun Day will feature a nine-hole event, with members and non-members welcome, from 4.30 to 6.30.

Registration is open in the Pro Shop, with a special menu prepared by the resident chef and a presentation ceremony.
