Wright offers Brennan a contract

TOMMY Wright has moved to sign CIS Cup final hero Billy Brennan on a long term contract.

Brennan, who joined the Whites from UCD in January, has been offered a contract along with veteran goalkeeper Philip Matthews.

Billy has not put a foot wrong since he joined us and I would love to see him stay here,” said Distillery boss Wright. “Both he and Phil have been offered contracts.”

Wright and his squad have been savouring their great cup win this week.

“When you look back now and look at the magnitude of what we have achieved it has been astonishing.

“In just one year we have moved from a relegation fighting side to a top six finish and cup winners.”

Despite the staggering success, the boss is at pains to point out that amid all the glory the club is still not out of the woods as far as the financial side of things.

“A lot of nice things have been said about what we have achieved, but to me the best thing that could happen to the club is news that the ground has been sold to allow us to see a brighter future.

“Selling the ground would be even better than winning the cup. It would mean we can move forward. We have been fire-fighting for a long time and trying to steady the ship, but you cannot keep doing that.

“There are rumours of bids and things going on, but until it is all sorted out then we don’t know what is going to happen.

“The cup win and the huge amount of fans that came to support us are positive things. If we could even get a fraction of those fans to come to New Grosvenor more often it would make a huge difference.

“There is also going to be some funding from the government for ground improvement which means we can upgrade. Ideally we have a great location for a sporting centre of excellence.”

With only the Irish Cup ties taking place this weekend, Lisburn Distillery’s next game will be on April 16 at Crusaders.
