Young anglers to represent Ulster

TWO young Larne anglers are beginning to make waves in the sport.

East Antrim Surfcasters members Daniel Haggens from Sallagh Park and Andrew Ferguson from Craigyhill have qualified for the for the Ulster under-17s and Ulster under-21s, respectively.

Daniel, 14, won a bronze medal at the Ulster Provincial Council’s Closed Gold Medal Junior Championships in Ballycastle earlier this month. He will now go on to represent Ireland in Co. Wicklow where, if he can finish in the top five, he will qualify to fish in the home nations.

Andrew, who is 18, scooped gold in Ballycastle, seeing off fierce competition in the hotly-contested junior event and will now captain the under-21 team in the Home Nations.

Stephen Hodge, of East Antrim Surfcasters, told the Times: “We have around 25 members in the club and we regularly hold competitions. We only have three junior members in the club so for two of them to qualify for Ulster is just great.”

Meanwhile, William Weir has made the fish-offs when the top 20 anglers will compete for a spot in the five-strong Ireland team. Also competing in for a spot a coveted place in the Irish team are Harold McKee (snr.) and Harold McKee (jnr.) who performed well at the recent Master Angler Shore competition in Connacht.

East Antrim Surfcasters are now looking for new members both senior and junior. Juniors can be accompanied by either parent or supervising adult. If you are interested in joining call Stephen Hodge on 028 28 277669 between 8am and 5pm. The club wishes to thank sponsor, P & O European Ferries.
