Young Guns show up well

On Saturday 8 December Coleraine and District Motor Club Kart Section’s ‘Young Guns’ race team traveled to Kirkistown race track for round two of the 500 Motor Club winter championship.

Local driver Sam McDonnell was on fine form in his late race as a novice and after some setup changes following practice the Coleraine lad secured a fine third fastest in timed qualifying for a second row start for the main races. With three straight races each counting towards the championship the team knew consistency was key to success.

When the lights changed for the start of the first race Sam entered the first few corners in third place but withing striking distance of the leaders. Following a few brave moves Sam ended lap two in the lead and although he was put under severe pressure from Dunloy’s Seog Martin he kept his nerve and slowly built a lead of three seconds to take his first race win to the delight of his father Tony. Two strong results in the following two races moved Sam into third place in the championship at the half way stage.
