Young Spartans Set to Retain YAL Title

BOTH local clubs, Olympian and defending champions City of Derry Spartans will be in Antrim this Saturday for the NI Young Athletes League Final with the red vests hot favourites to retain their team title and move on to the UK Final in Manchester on the weekend of 4/5th September.

The Spartans totally dominated all three qualifying rounds, topping the league table with a 500 points margin over closest challangers, Belfast outfit Regent House and Olympian another 400 points back in third.

The competition involves Boys and Girls squads at U13, U15 and U17 level with each age group committing two athletes to each of the entire Track/Field events programme.

This emphasises both quality and quantity and with local under age athletics currently on a real high it’s no surprise that both City squads are doing so well.

With their big numbers and crucially, local, provincial and national individual and team success at an unprecedented high, the City of Derry squads are expected to dominate on Saturday. However the club mentors are not complacent and the red vests are expected to travel at close to full strength with victory the target.

Olympian will hope to stay in the bronze medal position but will face a tough test from the teams in fourth and fifth place, Lagan Valley andCity of Lisburn. Good Luck to both squads.
