Youngsters shine at Coleraine Skills Night

UPWARDS of seventy young people participated in Coleraine Cricket Club's annual Skills Night last Friday.

The young cricketers participated in a range of skills-based challenges designed to test their catching, throwing, batting and bowling skills.

The competitions included a sudden death ‘bowl out’ and a ‘biggest hit’ competition. Once again the standard of cricket on display was exceptionally high across each of the different age groups and the coaches often found it extremely difficult to separate the competitors.

Following the competitions the young people were then joined by their parents and supporters for a barbecue and the presentation of awards by club professional Mohammad Salman.

The prize for the overall best performer in the Under 12 category went to Varun Chopra while Matthew Smyth scooped the award for the Under 14s and Michael Macraild was the overall winner in the Under 16 category.

Youth co-ordinator Neil Morrison was delighted by the success of the event.

He said: “It is great to see so many young people taking part in sport and having fun. The standard of cricket on display is testament to the hard work that has been put in by the coaches since our first session back in April and I would like to publicly thank them for their efforts.

“We have lots of exciting talent coming through our ranks at the moment and every single young person should be proud of what they have achieved.”

The Youth Section would like to thank everyone who helped out on the night and particularly Gareth’s Takeaway and Huey & Henderson’s Sports for their sponsorship of the event.

Friday night sessions for primary school children have now ended but squad training sessions for under 12s, under 14s and under 16s will continue throughout July at the usual times.
