Youth hockey starts

THE New Western Junior Hockey League began with matches for under 9s mixed teams Foyle Foxes and Falcons.

This was their first competitive matches in the new league structure from Ulster Hockey to help nurture children and develop the virtues of team work in a fun filled environment.

Daniel Donaghy and Gary Throne, FHC’s children and youth officers respectively - assisted with umpiring the matches and also had the task of selecting best ‘team player’ for each of the teams. Jamie McColgan and Josh Milling were duly chosen and awarded for their considerate play and attitude on the pitch.

Every child enjoyed themselves and the production line for hockey seniors looks good for the future.

There is much potential for more children who might decide to give hockey a test drive as it is only growing grass roots here in the northwest of late.

Kids first practice with us is free on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm - 7.30pm at St Columb’s Park astro pitch and everyone is welcome from age 6 upwards.
