You've got to hand it to Peter!

THERE aren't too many sportsmen or women who become champions at their first attempt at a sport.

But in the words of Andy Gray: "Peter Dunlop, take a bow son!" For the local man has just been crowned the All-Ireland Arm Wrestling champion.

Peter, who lives in Ballymoney, held off a very strong field at the Downshire Arms Hotel, Banbridge including Irish Open champion Richard 'Over the Top' McAvoy and three time Irish Strongest Man Jason Reilly to lift the coveted Magnus Sammuelson Trophy.

"Obviously I'm delighted to have won it, especially as this was my first time competing in the sport," Peter told Times Sport.

"A couple of guys I know persuaded me to go along and take part, but I wasn't really expecting to much as I'd only ever arm wrestled in a bar before for a bit of 'craic'.

"But it went well for me and I ended up surprising myself by winning it. I had 16 bouts and I won them all so I can't really complain about that!"

Peter dispatched Donegal's Kieran Gallagher in the quarter finals to set up a last four meeting with Irish Open champ McAvoy.

In the end though Peter's strength proved too much for McAvoy no matter what arm wrestling moves he tried to pull and the big man made his way to the final.

The final was a real North v South affair as Peter took on Jason Reilly from Co Meath, who was also competing in his first ever final.

Many were tipping Reilly to have the advantage with his arm wrestling experience, but Peter proved them all wrong as he slayed the huge southern to lift the title, much to his delight.

"It really was a fantastic achievement and it shows what people can do if they try a new sport," said Peter.
