The choir’s musical director, Kirsty Orr, and the rest of the members had been looking forward to their celebratory concert at the Island Hall but sadly due to the Coronavirus pandemic the concert had to be shelved.

However, never ones to be defeated, the ladies have been busy sharing their love of the choir online, and even put together a virtual performance of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida.

Looking back on a decade of performances and awards, musical director Kirsty said: “It’s very special to us that we made it to ten years. I started the choir because I thought it would help me make some friends. I wanted to do something for me and I thought about joining a choir. I’d always been in a choir all the way through school and when I started teaching in primary school I have been directing choirs. But interestingly there wasn’t a choir at that point in Lisburn.

“It did cross my mind that I had the skills to start my own choir. The first thing I did was secure a venue for it. Brownlee Primary School was perfect for it and Colin Elliott has been a saint all the way through. I also needed to find an accompanist, and that was Charlotte King, who has supported me in every way she possibly could. But I also needed to find some members and Julie-Ann Spence at the Ulster Star was delighted to hear about the project. Two weeks later 43 members turned up and now we have about 80 members from all different walks of life and it’s absolutely brilliant.

“The other member of our team is Joan Houston, she’s brilliant at organising our trips and she’s a fabulous friend, The group of women in Lisburn Harmony Ladies Choir are the best women in the world. I would challenge you to find a better group of women anywhere, It’s like a big family. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to work with them.”
