It’s no wonder that the makers of a television series filled with dragons, magic and breathtaking landscapes chose Northern Ireland as its primary filming location.
Here are nine Game Of Thrones locations in Northern Ireland you need to visit:
5. Ballintoy Harbour
Ballintoy Harbour is the Game of Thrones filming location for Lordsport, the main port of Pyke. One of the Iron Islands, Pyke is the home of Theon and Yara Greyjoy. Located on the North Coast, with its panoramic coastal views, rocky landscape and bustling wildlife, Ballintoy Harbour is the perfect backdrop for Pyke. In season two of Game Of Thrones, it is here that we see Theon returning home after his time as a ward in Winterfell. We are first introduced to Theon’s sister Yara, who watches him get baptised. Be sure to check out The Fullerton Arms closeby to the harbour, where one of the ten hidden doors can be found commemorating Game Of Thrones. The ‘sixth’ door features the fearsome dragon Drogon with Dothraki stallions, symbolising the Dothraki allegiance with Queen Daenerys. Photo: DiscoverNI
6. Portstewart Strand
Sweeping along the edge of the north coast with idyllic views of Inishowen headland and Mussenden Temple perched atop the cliffs, Portstewart Strand is a favourite amongst both locals and tourists. The strand doubled as the coast of Dorne in season five of Game of Thrones when Jaime Lannister was tasked by his sister Cersei to bring her daughter Myrcella back to King's Landing. 7. Audley’s Castle
Audley’s Castle is a Norman battlement located in County Down and overlooking Strangford Lough where Robb Stark hid his army while they prepared to battle the Lannisters. Beside the castle is Audley’s Field, where the aftermath of the battle of Oxcross was filmed. This is where Robb meets his future wife Talisa, a meeting which ultimately leads to the infamous red wedding. Photo: Visit Mourne Mountains
8. Binevenagh
Binevenagh Mountain plays backdrop to the peak overlooking Dothraki Sea. Dominating the skyline over the villages of Bellarena, Downhill, Castlerock and Benone beach. It appears in season five when Daenerys Targaryen was rescued by her dragon, Drogon, while fleeing from the Sons of the Harpy in the fighting pits of Meereen. Photo: Causeway Coast & Glens website
