Northern Ireland is expected to see the largest proportional increase in the number of people living with dementia of any UK nation by 2040, according to Alzheimer’s Society.

With six offices covering every Health and Social Care Trust area, Home Instead delivers specialist dementia care across Northern Ireland through specially trained Care Professionals, providing tailored support at home for people living with the condition.

Home Instead is using World Alzheimer’s Month as an opportunity to begin a recruitment drive throughout Northern Ireland. With the number of people living with dementia projected to rise by 51% by 2040, the need for people with the skills and compassion to support them at home will only grow. Home Instead is keen to arm more people with these sought after skills.

Una O’Duil, owner of Home Instead Banbridge, Newry & Mourne, said: “Our care professionals do more than offer support; they make it possible for our parents and grandparents to live the life they deserve at home. It’s particularly important for people living with dementia, since they can stay in familiar surroundings and maintain the routines that help them feel reassured.

“Recruiting 450 care professionals over the next 12 months is a challenge, but one we’re ready to rise to. We’re looking for compassionate people who want to make a difference, delivering relationship-led care built around each person’s preferences and routines. With visits lasting at least an hour, our care professionals have time to build meaningful, lasting connections with clients, forming genuine friendships along the way.”

Care professionals at Home Instead are standing behind the recruitment drive, calling on fellow people in the community to follow in their footsteps. Katie, who has been a care professional for three years, says: “In how many roles can you say that you’re making a difference to someone’s life every day? Supporting older people and making it possible for them to stay living in the home they love is incredibly rewarding.

“I have furthered my skillset by completing Home Instead’s award-winning dementia training, gaining practical knowledge and the confidence to provide compassionate support to people living with dementia. Being a care professional has opened my eyes to typical behaviours of someone living with the condition and, thanks to the training, I know how to respond to keep them safe and comforted.

“I encourage people across the community to join me in making Northern Ireland an even more dementia friendly place to grow old in.”
