Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has requested that a plinth and plaque be erected to “honour the bravery and dedication and the distinguished service they provide”.

The council believes it would be fitting to “mark their contribution to the emergency response during the Covid-19 pandemic and recognise their dedicated service to the people of our borough and Northern Ireland”.

It is likely that a small socially distanced dedication ceremony will be arranged to mark the unveiling at which the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston and representatives of NIFRS are likely to attend.

Speaking at a meeting of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council on Monday evening, Carrickfergus DUP Cllr Marc Collins said: “I think it is brilliant to see it coming before council.”

Carrick Ulster Unionist Cllr John McDermott added: “It is a fitting tribute to the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service.”

The Freedom of the Borough honour was bestowed on the NIFRS in 2006 by the legacy Carrickfergus Borough Council for its life-saving work. The station has been serving the town for more than 100 years.
