14 years on, murdered Dungannon taxi driver's family issue new appeal for information

Mr McDonald, who was from the Windmill Hill Road area, was gunned down on the night of April 17, 2002.

The father-of-eight was hit four times with a shotgun and died at the scene at Annaghbeg Park North in Donaghmore.

Barney’s family appealed: “On this, the 14th anniversary of his death, we would appeal to anyone who has any information that would help us to get justice.

“Fourteen years on and people still say it was terrible what happened to Barney, and when asked “Do you know who done it?” most folk would say “the dogs in the street know who it was”. So if you are one of the many who know, why not clear your conscience and let us know what you know.

“Our father Barney ran a very successful taxi business for about twenty years in the greater Dungannon area. He knew his customers very well and was highly respected by all.

“On the night of Wednesday 17th April 2002, at approximately 11.00pm, Barney was lured to a snooker club in Annaghbeg Park North in Donaghmore.

“He was driving a silver Toyota Avensis with a white taxi roof sign. He reversed into the drive of the club, blew the horn for the fare which he had gone to pick up, and it was then that two gun men with shotguns appeared from the bushes and shot him at point blank range through the front windscreen and side window. Barney died instantly from this cowardly attack. May he rest in peace.

“If you know anything about the planning of this crime, where the guns came from, where they went to after the shooting or anything that might lead us to the perpetrators then do the right thing and let us know who and why.”
