Academy students experience Stormont

Banbridge Academy politics students visited Parliament Buildings Stormont recently as part of the NI Assembly’s Education Programme.

The students met with MLA’s, observed part of the Welfare Reform debate in the Assembly chamber and received a tour of the building.

The lower sixth pupils also had question and answer sessions with representatives of the political parties, meeting with local Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson.

Mrs Dobson, who is the UUP’s Westminster candidate, said: “It was lovely to see the pupils of my old school joining us at Stormont. It’s hugely important that young people take an interest and play an active role in politics.

“The education programme gives young people the chance to meet with and quiz politicians as well as getting an insight into the work of the Assembly and the work of an MLA.

“As a former pupil and member of the Board of Governors at the Academy I was especially pleased to see so many students studying politics and have no doubt what-so-ever that there are many budding politicians of the future within their ranks.

“I would also like to wish both Jamie and Adam all the best as they complete in the Youth Parliament Elections. It’s important that young people have a voice in decision making and I wish all our Youth Parliament candidates well as they seek the support of their peers.”
