Animal cruelty investigation launched after Peregrine Falcon poisoned in Moneymore

Police in Magherafelt are appealing for information after a report of animal cruelty at the Carmean Road, Moneymore area on Tuesday 15th July.

Shortly before 1:40pm, it was reported that a Peregrine Falcon was found fatally injured in the area.

The falcon was taken to vet at the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for further investigations to determine the cause of its injuries.

Following this investigation, it has been determined the falcon was poisoned by Carbofurans. Carbofuran is an illegal pesticide in the EU used to control insects attacking field crops.

Sergeant Sam Young said: “Police are appealing for any information in relation to this incident. The results of the investigation carried out by the DARD vet shows that carbofurans was used to fatally injure the falcon. Anyone with any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact Magherafelt Police Station on the non emergency number 101.”
