Appeal for return of uncle’s Death Penny

A Waterside man researching his family history has appealed for the return of a Death Penny presented to his family after his great great uncle’s death in WWI.

Keith Wright, from Brigade, Director of Foyle Family History Centre, said his family received the penny after Andrew Charles Glover Ferguson, from George’s Street, a sergeant in WWI was killed in action.

His Great Great Uncle also served as a sergeant in the Coldstream Guards and saw action in the Boer War.

“I was talking with historian Trevor Temple about two years ago, and he told me he had spoken to someone who showed him the penny, and I am appealing to that person to come forward and help me reunite the penny with the family. I would particularly love it to come home for my mother Wilma’s sake,” he said.
