Ballyclare supporters hoping for cup upset

PEOPLE across the borough and beyond have been voicing their support for Ballyclare High as the school’s First XV rugby team prepare to take on Methodist College in the Northern Bank Schools’ Cup final at Ravenhill today (Monday, March 19).

Ballyclare, who secured their place in the decider with a convincing 26-12 win over Wallace High School, haven’t lifted the prestigious trophy since 1973 - their one and only win in the competition. But coach Dan Soper is hoping that this year’s squad, under the captaincy of Grant Bartley, has what it takes to bring the cup back to Rashee Road.

Although Methody will be favourites for the game, Ballyclare’s supporters are hopeful that their team can cause an upset.

Past pupil and former Ireland cricketer, Kyle McCallan said he’ll be digging out his old school honours blazer for the trip to Ulster Rugby HQ for the final.

“They’ve been on the verge for some time now and I was absolutely delighted when they beat Wallace to get to the final. I think they’ll give Methody a good game and I wish them the very best of luck,” he told the Times.

Mayor Billy Webb, who recently wrote to Ballyclare Principal David Knox to congratulate the school’s First XI hockey team on winning the Senior Schools’ Cup for the first time and the First XV on reaching the rugby final, added: “Ballyclare High has had a fantastic sporting year so far and this is down not just to the sporting talent of the pupils, but to their dedication and the staff.

“I know that whatever happens on the 19th the boys have shown great motivation, courage and skill and the school, their parents and Newtownabbey are very proud of them. I wish them all the best for the final.”

Ballymena Academy Principal, Ronnie Hassard, a former teacher and rugby coach at Ballyclare High, believes the underdogs can upset the odds.

“I think it is a tremendous achievement to get to the final and I really think they can do it. They are a very successful team - very well organised and very well drilled. Anything can happen in a final and I wish them the very best,” he commented.

Darren Black, President of Ballyclare Chamber of Trade, added: “This has been a tremendous achievement for the school and really highlights Ballyclare positively. Everyone that has contributed to reaching the final can be extremely proud of their efforts to date and all the local businesses wish them the very best of luck.”

The Schools’ Cup final is scheduled to kick off at 3pm.
