Big grant for Men’s Shed project

A men’s group in Ballymena South has been granted £26,000 worth of funding by Social Development Minister, Nelson McCausland.

The grant will help equip a ‘Men’s Shed at the Ballee and Harryville Enterprise Units in the town.

The ‘Men’s Shed’ concept has gained popularity in the UK in recent years, as a way to promote social interaction and well-being of men. The Shed is a space for men to come together to work on DIY projects, learn new skills and socialise.

The Minister said: “The Men’s Shed will provide a coordinated network of services which will address physical, emotional and social needs for older people, enabling them to live independently, and with healthier lifestyles within their own communities.”

He said it was widely recognised that men can be reluctant to discuss health issues, and in particular mental health issues. The Men’s Shed is open to men aged 50 years and over and where the primary activity is the provision of a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where older people can feel more supported and secure in their own community and within their own peer group.
