Coalisland police station bomb accused fails in bid to be allowed to spend time with family at Christmas

A Coalisland man accused of trying to blow up the town’s police station 18 years ago, has failed in his attempt to have the terms of his bail varied so he can spend time with his children at Christmas.

Paul Campbell, 37, from The Mills, faces one charge of causing an explosion likely to endanger life, relating to an attack on the former police barracks in March 1997.

At Dungannon Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Campbell’s lawyer asked that the defendant be allowed to vary the residence terms of his bail.

The defence barrister said Campbell wished to bring presents into the family home for his three children, and spend time with them on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

A detective constable in the case, however, said police were fearful of any interference with two civilian witnesses who, she added, still live in the Coalisland area.

District Judge, John Meehan, refused the application.
