Coleraine firm in court over death of worker

A Coleraine sawmill firm is to go on trial accused of corporate manslaughter following the death of a man who worked there.

Peter Lennon was killed while working at A. Diamond and Son back in September 2012.

Mr Lennon, who was in his 50s, was a father-of-three and a grandfather.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court on Tuesday, two senior figures within the firm appeared in court in connection with Mr Lennon’s death.

One, company secretary Colm Diamond, told judge Liam McNally he understood the single charge the firm faces, that of corporate manslaughter.

The defence made no answer to the charge, with a lawyer saying his clients did not concede there was a prima facie case against them.

Judge McNally said he was satisfied the firm had a case to answer and sent the case for trial at Antrim Crown Court next month.

He ordered that £750 bail be paid into the court.

No members of Mr Lennon’s family were present in court for the brief hearing.
