Community service for punch-up outside Magherafelt nightclub

A teenager who punched a nightclub patron on the head and mouth breaking a tooth, was ordered to carry out 80 hours of community service when he appeared at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Martin Mulhern (19), of Dernaflaw Cottages, Dungiven, admitted assaulting Mark Geoffrey, causing him actual bodily harm on October 31 2014.

Describing it as a nasty assault, District Judge Alan White told Mulhern that he had “grossly over-reacted.” He ordered defendant to pay £250 compensation.

The court heard the incident happened at 11.25pm in a Magherafelt nightclub when Mulhern approached the injured party and asked him about looking to fight with his cousin.

A defence lawyer pointed out that defendant has no record for violence and, according to the probation report, was of a “low risk” of re-offending.
