Mid Ulster, Ulster Unionist Party MLA, Sandra Overend, said Norman’s involvement as one of the 75 standard bearers, was not a surprise considering he holds the title of National Standard Bearer.

“I was delighted to see Norman Espie taking part in the Battle of Britain commemorations in London, as part of the march past by Royal British Legion Standard Bearers,” she said.

“It is fitting that those brave airmen that played such a vital role in defending Britain, and Europe, in the Second World War, were recognised in this way. Standard Bearers from the Royal British Legion participated in a march past following the flypast of Spitfire and Hurricane planes, and a service was held at St Paul’s Cathedral.

“Norman Espie has won numerous titles, including again lifting the National Standard Bearer title in May of this year, so it was no surprise to see that he was one of 75 Standard Bearers taking part in the commemorations.

I am aware of the huge amount of work and dedication that Norman puts into his role as Standard Bearer for Cookstown Branch of the British Legion, and want to congratulate him on this achievement.”
