Corporation minutes from 1643 to 1901 now online

AN exciting new archive of the minutes of Derry Coroporation from 1673 to 1901 will be launched at the Tower Museum today at 2pm.

Members of the public will be able to avail of the historic records of the city with the simple click of a button.

Historic records of Derry Corporation, dating back more than 300 years, will be available online from next week thanks to a partnership project between The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Derry City Council’s Heritage and Museums Service.

The online archive will be launched on Wednesday, September 21 at the city’s Tower Museum, Londonderry at 2pm.

Ten original volumes of Derry Corporation minute books, which cover the period 1673 to 1841, currently reside at PRONI in Belfast, while thirteen later volumes, 1841 to 1901, are located in the Derry City Council Archive at the Harbour Museum, Londonderry.

The new online resource will enable anyone with an internet connection to access any of these volumes, at any location.

Bernadette Walsh, archivist with the Council’s Heritage and Museum Service said the launch would be the culmination of almost two years hard work in collating the information.

She said the online service will greatly enhance the collection of resources available to assist people to find out more about the city and the key decisions that were made in relation to the city and its future.
