Rhys Campbell of Rose Cottages, Portadown pleaded guilty to possessing the Class B drug cannabis.

At around 4pm on August 25 this year police were on mobile patrol at Rose Cottages in Portadown and spotted Campbell walking out from one of the houses and get into a vehicle parked outside.

Police spoke with him and noticed a strong smell of cannabis. When they told him they were going to search his car, Campbell reached into the glove compartment taking out a plastic bag which he handed to police.

It contained 48 grams of herbal cannabis. During interview he made full admissions saying the drugs were worth £250.

Campbell’s solicitor Mr Philip Reid said his client is a single man living with his father and on Universal Credit.

He pointed out his client has a “limited” record with a previous conviction for possessing Class A drugs.

He said his client says he’s a regular user of cannabis and that’s why he bought this “larger amount”.

"It’s really to keep him going over a course of time. It’s for personal use,” he said, asking for leniency.

District Judge Barry McElholm fined the defendant £250 and ordered him to pay the £15 Offender Levy. He also ordered a destruction order for the drugs and gave the defendant 16 weeks to pay the fine.
