Co Derry foreman caught speeding in van on A6 Glenshane Road loses licence for 14 days

A Co Derry foreman caught speeding in a van on the A6 Glenshane Road, Maghera, has lost his licence for two weeks.

Fifty-two-year-old Rodney O’Neill from Knock Cullen, Dungiven, was also fined £125 with a £15 offender’s levy on a charge of excess speed for vehicle classification at 7am on August 13 last.

Magherafelt Magistrates Court was told on Wednesday that a van driven by the defendant was detected travelling at 73 mph, 23 mph over the speed limit for the vehicle.

Prosecuting counsel said the defendant has nine penalty points on his licence.

A defence lawyer said O’Neill was a contract foreman and his licence is essential for work and taking his mother to hospital appointments.

He pleaded with the court to consider imposing a short period of disqualification.

District Judge Conor Heaney remarked that the defendant had picked up a number of speeding convictions within a short space of time.

He told him to “think twice” before putting his foot on the accelerator.
