Man (21) jailed for role in serious disorder in Ballymena
A 21-year-old man has been jailed for his role in serious disorder in Ballymena in June of last year.
He was sentenced at Antrim Crown Court on Wednesday (November 4) after being convicted of riot.
Jacob Sharp, with an address listed on the charge sheet as Drumtara, Ballymena, was sentenced to 28 months – with half to be spent in custody and half on licence.
Speaking after the hearing, Detective Chief Inspector Michael O’Loan said: “On Monday, 9th June, 2025 large-scale disorder broke out on the streets of Ballymena involving a large crowd of rioters. Further violence then followed across other areas in Northern Ireland.

“Damage was caused to roads, homes, cars and local business premises, with people left fearing for their lives. Our officers also came under attack and many were left injured after petrol bombs, heavy masonry and fireworks were thrown at them.
“Sharp was part of a crowd who had gathered in the Clonavon Terrace area of the town on the evening of Monday, 9th June, 2025. Sharp remained part of the group as they became hostile towards police and attacked private property.
“Police captured footage of Sharp carrying out a sustained attack on officers with bricks and destroying a privately-owned boat.

“Following the release of his image by police as part of a social media and local media appeal, Sharp handed himself in and was subsequently arrested and admitted to the offence of riot.
“Our dedicated investigation team has worked tirelessly to ensure that those involved are prosecuted and today’s sentencing is one of many in relation to this disorder.
