Man found standing at night at central reservation of A8 dual-carrageway at Ballynure is convicted of jaywalking

Police responded to reports of a man standing at the central reservation of the A8 dual-carriageway near Ballynure at night and after appearing at Ballymena Magistrates' Court he was convicted of a charge of jaywalking and fined £200.
The charge faced by the 26-year-old was that on October 13 this year 'being a pedestrian, endangered your own safety or that of another person through your own negligence on a road'.
The defendant, Ionut Tortan, of no fixed abode, had the assistance of a Romanian language interpreter at court.
Police were called out at 9.40pm. An officer "apprehended" the defendant "as he attempted to climb over the central reservation towards the Belfast-bound traffic".
Police removed him from the road to a "place of safety". An officer said Tortan was "unable to offer a reasonable explanation as to why he was on the central reservation or what his intentions were".
After reading statements from police officers, District Judge Nigel Broderick convicted the defendant of the charge.
