Newtownabbey police plan weekend patrols to deter young people ‘hanging out’ at derelict buildings

Police have issued a warning about the dangers of young people trespassing at derelict buildings in Newtownabbey.

It comes in the wake of recent incidents where the emergency services have been involved.

In an appeal today (Friday) PSNI Antrim and Newtownabbey said: “If you are planning on heading to the shore or visiting your local park or green space area this weekend then please remember to treat the place with respect.

“Be aware of bye-laws regarding alcohol consumption, make sure your behaviour doesn’t impact on other people out to enjoy the day, and have respect for local residents. If you plan on taking your car, bike or motorcycle to the any location drive safely and reduce your speed accordingly. We will be on patrol to ensure the safety of everyone. Remember speed kills.

“We are aware that young people are using abandoned derelict buildings and parks across the area to hang out. While we understand it’s great to have somewhere to go, especially when the rain is pouring, trespassing can bring its own dangers.

“Bringing alcohol or drugs into the mix can leave young people especially vulnerable. We continue to be out on patrol this weekend to ensure our young people are hanging out safely and we would encourage parents to know what their children are doing.

“Most weekends we are in the unfortunate position of finding a teenager so drunk that we either need request medical assistance or provide free lift to their home or a Custody Suite
