Portrush man threatened to kill was “zombified” on drink and drugs

Dean McDaid, 34, whose address was given as Maghaberry Prison, but is originally from Eglinton Street, Portrush, appeared at Londonderry Crown Court.

McDaid admitted threatening to kill his girlfriend one day after their three-year relationship ended.

A barrister told the court that McDaid, who has 147 previous convictions, was “zombified” through alcohol and drugs when he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house.

He admitted holding a kitchen knife to his ex-girlfriend’s throat and threatening to kill her.

McDaid also pleaded guilty to causing £1,200 worth of criminal damage to her home and assaulting her mother and a police officer.

The offences took place at Turmeel Road in Dungiven in October 2013.

The barrister said the relationship between the couple, who were described as habitual drug users, was “mutually destructive” and that it came to an “explosive” end.

McDaid was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Wednesday.
