Dad’s Day fundraisera big Rotary success

Rotary Clubs across the newly formed Causeway Coast and Glens Council area had united in their efforts to plan and organise a Prostate Cancer UK charity day on “Dad’s Day”, June 21.

The Rotary organisation had challenged Rotary Clubs in Britain and Ireland to get on their bikes to raise much needed funds for Prostate Cancer UK and Rotarians from the Coleraine, Ballycastle, Ballymoney and Limavady Clubs accepted the challenge.

All 75 sponsored cyclists arrived to be treated to delicious coffee and scones in the atmospheric little Tea Room at Dunluce.

On Fathers’ Day itself 330 people, including Rotarians, family members and many members of the public assembled to enjoy a superb hog roast lunch in the marquee. The hot food and warm fellowship were welcome on a fairly chilly, early summer’s day.

In the draw made on the day the first prize, donated by Ballycastle Rotary Club, was a scenic helicopter ride along the North Coast. Second was a boat trip to beautiful Rathlin Island, provided by the Coleraine Club and the third prize, from the members of Ballymoney, was a week’s Time Share holiday in sunnier climes.

All proceeds from sponsorship, donations and ticket sales were donated to Prostate Cancer UK. The marvellous total of £4,700 was raised.

For providing unlimited access to their premises and hospitality as magnificent as the surroundings, all Clubs are indebted to Sean and Marie McKinley who, like many over the course of the weekend, truly epitomised the ethos of Rotary.

The organisers were delighted with the inaugural joint Rotary fundraiser.
